The basic definition of representation in the media is simply how media, such as television, film and books, portray certain types of people or communities. There are a number of groups who are underrepresented in most Western media. They include women, people of color, LGBTQA+ people, people with a range of body shapes and types, people of non-Christian religions, and differently-abled people. There has been a steady increase of diversity in media, but progress has been long and slow.
AXE
The representation used for Axe was minimal to none. Majority of the women Portrayed in the commercial are white, blond woman. All of the woman in the commercial are wearing bikinis and have ideal bodies to portray the Sexy message the company is trying to set out.The one man in the commercial is white. This lack of representation is dangerous because it reinforces the idea that in order to be considered pretty, you must be skinny and have a perfect body.
H&M
The H&M commercial Is very inclusive and has an excellent use of representation.First of all , much of the casts consists of people of different genders and represents people of many different cultures and races. The commercial challenges traditional stereotypes by having members of the cast wear items that go against traditional stereotypes, such as men wearing skirts and woman wearing any type of suits. The presence of diversity was heavy during the ad presentation. It creates this idea for those who watch it that they do not have to conform to societal standards and do not have to look like the majority.
